Pocket is an official ABKC height variety. “Micro” is not a separate ABKC American Bully variety.

Quick answer: ABKC recognizes Pocket, Standard, Classic and XL varieties of the American Bully. Pocket, Standard and XL are separated primarily by mature height at the withers; Classic uses the same height range as Standard but has a lighter frame and less overall body mass. Micro Bully is a common market term, not a separate ABKC-recognized American Bully variety, so there is no universal official ABKC Micro height range.

At-a-Glance Comparison

Micro vs Pocket vs Standard, Classic & XL American Bully Size Chart

The most important distinction is whether a label is part of the registry standard. ABKC publishes defined adult height ranges for Pocket, Standard and XL. Classic shares the Standard height range but is differentiated by a lighter frame and less overall mass. “Micro” has no separate ABKC standard.

Label / variety ABKC status Adult male height Adult female height Main distinction
Micro Bully Not a separate ABKC variety No universal official ABKC range No universal official ABKC range Market term commonly used for very compact dogs; definitions vary.
Pocket Official ABKC variety 14 in to under 17 in 13 in to under 16 in Shorter mature height while retaining American Bully breed type.
Standard Official ABKC variety 17–20 in 16–19 in Baseline Standard height with substantial bone and muscular breed type.
Classic Official ABKC variety 17–20 in 16–19 in Same height range as Standard, but lighter frame and less overall body mass.
XL Official ABKC variety Over 20–23 in Over 19–22 in Taller adult height while retaining American Bully breed type.

Weight does not define these ABKC varieties. The ABKC standard states that there is no particular weight for the breed and that height and weight should remain proportionate to the dog’s frame.

Registry Terminology

Which American Bully Sizes Are Officially Recognized?

Official ABKC varieties

Pocket, Standard, Classic and XL appear in the ABKC American Bully standard. Pocket and XL are amendments to the basic Standard based on adult height. Classic follows the Standard height range but is distinguished by lighter bone and less overall body mass.

Unofficial market labels

Micro, Nano and similar terms may be used by breeders or sellers, but they are not separate ABKC American Bully varieties. Because there is no universal ABKC Micro standard, the label alone does not prove adult height, structure, health or registration status.

For the complete recognized class framework—including Pocket, Standard, Classic and XL—use Venomline’s American Bully breed and class guide. For show-entry divisions, points, majors and titles, use the ABKC classes and show guide.

Micro Bully

What Is a Micro Bully Compared With a Pocket Bully?

“Micro Bully” is commonly used for American Bully-type dogs marketed as smaller, shorter or more extreme than the recognized Pocket variety. The term is not standardized by the ABKC, so two breeders can use “Micro” to describe dogs with different heights, proportions and pedigrees.

That makes objective verification more important than the label. Ask for mature measurements, registration information, pedigree, videos of adults moving naturally, and mature relatives or previous productions.

Do not convert “Micro” into a fake registry number. There is no single official ABKC Micro height range to quote.

For the full two-way comparison of recognition, size, structure, health, temperament, price and buyer considerations, read Pocket Bully vs Micro Bully. For the term itself, use Venomline’s Micro Bully guide.

Pocket American Bully

How Big Is a Pocket Bully?

Under the current ABKC Pocket amendment, mature males are under 17 inches and no less than 14 inches at the withers. Mature females are under 16 inches and no less than 13 inches. Pocket dogs should retain the same basic American Bully breed type as the Standard variety; “Pocket” describes shorter adult height, not a requirement to be lightweight or miniature.

Venomline’s dedicated Pocket Bully size guide owns the deeper adult-size topic: exact height boundaries, weight context, maturity, proportions and measuring technique. This comparison page intentionally keeps that material concise.

Standard American Bully

How Big Is a Standard American Bully?

The ABKC Standard range is 17–20 inches for mature males and 16–19 inches for mature females, measured at the withers. The Standard should show substantial bone, muscle and recognizable American Bully breed type without exaggeration that interferes with normal movement or function.

The Standard is not simply a “larger Pocket.” Both belong to the same breed framework, but they occupy different adult height ranges. A dog’s quality still depends on structure, balance, movement, condition, temperament and responsible breeding—not height alone.

Other Official Varieties

Where Do Classic and XL Fit?

Classic American Bully

Classic uses the same mature height ranges as Standard—17–20 inches for males and 16–19 inches for females—but ABKC distinguishes it by lighter body frames, lighter bone and less overall body mass.

XL American Bully

XL is the taller recognized variety. ABKC lists males over 20 inches through 23 inches and females over 19 inches through 22 inches at the withers.

Key distinction: Classic is primarily a build distinction within the Standard height range; Pocket and XL are height amendments to the basic Standard.

Direct Comparison

Pocket Bully vs Standard American Bully: What Is the Difference?

Comparison Pocket Standard
Recognition Official ABKC variety Official ABKC variety
Male height 14 to under 17 in 17–20 in
Female height 13 to under 16 in 16–19 in
Breed type Same core American Bully breed type in a shorter height range Baseline Standard height and build
Weight rule No separate official weight requirement No separate official weight requirement
Best way to compare Measure mature height correctly, then evaluate structure, movement, body condition, temperament and pedigree.

The cleanest dividing line is mature height. A male at exactly 17 inches is outside the Pocket range and within the Standard range; a female at exactly 16 inches is outside the Pocket range and within the Standard range under the ABKC wording.

Range Comparison

Pocket Bully vs XL Bully

Pocket and XL sit near opposite ends of the recognized American Bully height spectrum. Pocket emphasizes compact adult height; XL extends the same breed framework upward in mature height and overall scale.

Factor Pocket XL
Male height 14 to under 17 in Over 20 to 23 in
Female height 13 to under 16 in Over 19 to 22 in
Practical ownership More compact crate, vehicle and handling footprint More space, equipment and physical handling capacity required
What does not change Neither size label guarantees health, temperament, structure or breeding quality.

Range Comparison

Standard Bully vs XL Bully

Standard occupies the central recognized adult-height range. XL begins above the Standard ceiling and extends to the ABKC XL maximum. The correct choice is not “which is better,” but which mature size, movement profile and handling demand best fits the owner.

Standard

More moderate height, easier equipment fit for many homes, and a useful middle ground between Pocket and XL.

XL

Greater height and overall physical scale, requiring stronger leash handling, larger transport equipment and more room.

Buyer Fit

Which American Bully Size Fits Your Lifestyle?

If you prioritize... Start by researching... Then verify...
Compact recognized height Pocket Mature measurements, movement, breathing, parent size and structure
Very compact market terminology Micro Actual adult measurements and registry status rather than the label alone
More leg and stride without XL scale Standard Temperament, structure, body condition and mature relatives
Standard height with lighter frame Classic Build and substance, because Classic is not a shorter height category
Maximum recognized height XL Space, handling ability, movement, conditioning and local requirements

Size should narrow your search, not replace breeder evaluation. A smaller dog is not automatically easier, healthier or better suited to a family, and a larger dog is not automatically more athletic or higher quality.

Adult-Size Prediction

How to Estimate an American Bully Puppy’s Adult Size

No breeder can responsibly guarantee an exact adult height from a young puppy. A stronger estimate uses multiple pieces of evidence together.

1. Measure the mature parents

Actual adult sire and dam heights are more useful than promotional size labels.

2. Review mature relatives

Older full siblings, half siblings and previous productions can reveal how a family tends to mature.

3. Track growth over time

One puppy measurement is weak evidence. A sequence of measurements gives more context.

4. Separate height from weight

Bone, muscle, sex and body condition can change scale weight without changing the dog’s height class.

For age-based development rather than class comparison, use Venomline’s Pocket Bully growth and weight chart.

Classification Method

How American Bully Height Is Measured

Height is measured at the withers—the highest point of the shoulder blades—with the dog standing naturally on a flat surface. Do not measure to the top of the head or neck, and do not classify a young puppy from a temporary measurement.

Use mature height

Pocket and XL class language is based on adult height. Young dogs can change substantially during development.

Use an objective tool

A wicket or properly leveled measuring device is more reliable than a flexible tape held diagonally.

Repeat the measurement

Measure more than once after the dog settles into a natural stance.

Do not use weight as the class test

ABKC states that there is no particular breed weight; height and weight should be proportionate to frame.

For a step-by-step measuring walkthrough, use the Pocket Bully size and measuring guide.

Buyer Verification

How to Compare Size Claims Before Buying

Verify

  • Measured mature parents
  • Registry and pedigree information
  • Videos of adults standing and moving naturally
  • Mature siblings or prior productions when available
  • Health and body-condition transparency
  • Whether the advertised label matches an official registry class

Question

  • Guaranteed exact adult height or weight
  • “Micro” presented as an official ABKC class
  • Measurements taken to the head
  • Edited images that distort proportions
  • Obesity presented as superior mass
  • Size labels used without mature measurements

A size label is not a quality grade. Pocket, Standard, Classic or XL recognition does not by itself prove health, structure, temperament or breeding quality, and an unofficial “Micro” label does not prove a specific adult size.

Frequently Asked Questions

American Bully Size Comparison FAQ

What is the difference between a Micro Bully and a Pocket Bully?

Pocket is an official ABKC American Bully variety with defined mature male and female height ranges. Micro is a common market term without a separate universal ABKC height standard.

What is the difference between a Pocket Bully and a Standard American Bully?

The main registry difference is mature height. Pocket males are 14 inches to under 17 inches and females 13 inches to under 16 inches. Standard males are 17–20 inches and females 16–19 inches.

Is a Micro Bully an official ABKC class?

No. The ABKC American Bully standard lists Standard, Pocket, XL and Classic varieties. It does not publish a separate Micro American Bully variety or universal Micro height range.

Is Classic smaller than Standard?

Not by official height range. Classic uses the same ABKC height ranges as Standard but is distinguished by lighter body frame, lighter bone and less overall body mass.

How tall is an XL American Bully?

ABKC lists mature XL males as over 20 inches through 23 inches and mature females as over 19 inches through 22 inches at the withers.

Does weight determine whether an American Bully is Pocket, Standard or XL?

No. ABKC states that there is no particular weight for the breed. Height is the key size-class measurement for Pocket, Standard and XL, while weight should remain proportionate to frame.

Can a 17-inch male be a Pocket Bully?

No under the current ABKC Pocket wording. Pocket males must be under 17 inches and no less than 14 inches. A mature male measuring exactly 17 inches falls within the Standard male height range.

Which American Bully size is best?

No size is automatically best. Compare mature size, structure, movement, health information, temperament, breeder documentation and how the adult dog fits your household rather than treating a size label as a quality grade.

Research the Size—Then Evaluate the Dog

Use registry standards to understand size labels, then evaluate the actual parents, pedigree, mature productions, structure, movement, temperament and health information behind a breeding.
