After months of watching some of our best puppies mature, we finally decided which two females are staying with Venomline.
It was an extremely difficult decision. Several foundation-level prospects we seriously considered keeping are now available.
Making the breedings wasn't the hard part.
Deciding which ones we could actually keep was.
After months of watching some of the best puppies we've produced this year mature, we finally made our keeper decisions.
And man, this one was difficult.
With dogs of this quality, there was absolutely no reason to rush.
So we didn't.
We took our time.
We watched heads develop. We watched frames come together. We evaluated bone, fronts, rears, toplines, feet, movement, proportions, temperament, overall balance, pedigree and how each puppy fit the direction we're taking Venomline next.
There are foundation-level prospects in this group that I already know I may look back on a year from now and regret letting go.
That's how strongly I feel about these puppies.
Man, these pups are on a different level.
Some of our breedings this year have been among the best we've produced. The overall quality and consistency coming out of these litters has made the keeper decisions harder than they've been in a long time.
These aren't fourth- or fifth-pick puppies that have been sitting around waiting for someone to buy them.
These are dogs we held back because we were seriously considering keeping them ourselves.

Why We Took So Long to Decide
Sometimes people assume that if a puppy hasn't been advertised yet, something must be wrong with it.
In this case, it was almost the exact opposite.
We weren't advertising these puppies because we were trying to decide whether we could keep them.
When you're evaluating a potential keeper, there is value in patience.
A puppy can look exceptional very young and develop differently than expected. Another puppy can continue getting better every month.
Rather than making the decision based on one photograph or one stage of development, we gave ourselves time to evaluate the complete dog.
- overall balance;
- head development;
- muzzle and head proportions;
- bone and substance;
- chest and body width;
- front and rear assembly;
- topline;
- feet and pasterns;
- movement;
- compactness;
- temperament;
- pedigree and related productions;
- and the dog's potential role in the next generation.
You learn more when you wait.
Unfortunately, waiting doesn't make the final decision any easier.
The Problem With Producing Dogs You Want to Keep
Every serious breeding program eventually runs into the same problem:
You cannot keep everything you produce.
Between our current American Bully stud lineup , established females, retired dogs that aren't going anywhere and the younger dogs already developing here, we realistically have room for two new females.

Envy secured the second spot and will remain here as we continue watching her mature and develop.
Those are the two.
And choosing them didn't suddenly make the other dogs any easier to let go.
It just meant we finally ran out of room—and excuses.

These Aren't “Leftover” Puppies
A puppy becoming available later doesn't automatically mean it was the dog nobody wanted.
Breeders frequently hold potential keepers longer because development gives you more information.
That's what happened here.
We weren't trying to unload these dogs. We were trying to figure out how many excuses we could come up with to keep them.
Keeper Prospect, Show Prospect and Foundation Prospect Are Not the Same Thing
The American Bully world uses terms like “top pick,” “keeper,” “show prospect” and “foundation dog” constantly.
They shouldn't all mean the same thing.
Venomline Breeder Insight: Foundation Potential vs. Foundation Status
We use those terms carefully.
A young dog can absolutely show foundation-level potential based on structure, pedigree, temperament, development and how well that dog fits a breeding program.
But a true foundation dog earns that reputation over time.
Pedigree tells you what's behind the dog. Structure tells you what's standing in front of you. Production eventually tells you what the dog actually contributes.
That's why we call young dogs foundation prospects rather than pretending their story has already been written.

Why This Year's Breedings Have Me Excited
We've produced dogs we're extremely proud of before.
But looking at several of the breedings from this year, I believe we're seeing another step forward.
The overall consistency has been impressive.
We're seeing the compactness and substance people associate with Venomline, but our goal isn't simply to make the shortest or heaviest dog possible.
The complete package still matters.
Head. Bone. Chest. Topline. Rear. Feet. Movement. Temperament. Balance.
A dog shouldn't stop being a complete American Bully just because it has extreme features.
That's one of the reasons these keeper decisions took us so long.
We weren't choosing whichever puppy looked the most dramatic in one photo.
We were trying to decide which dogs best represented where we want to go next.
Venomline Breeder Insight
The hardest keeper decisions aren't made when one puppy is clearly superior to everything else.
They're made when several puppies legitimately deserve consideration and your program only has room for one or two.
That's where we found ourselves with this group.
Foundation Quality Is About More Than Pedigree
Pedigree matters.
But a pedigree alone isn't the dog.
If you're considering one of these females for a future program, ask:
- What does the sire consistently contribute?
- What does the dam contribute?
- What do related offspring look like as adults?
- Does the puppy have the structural strengths your program needs?
- What weaknesses would you eventually need to complement?
- What would you eventually breed her to?
- Does this dog actually have a clear role in your program?
Buyers and breeders can compare real client litters produced from Venomline studs rather than evaluating pedigrees only on paper.
Structure Before Color
Black tri. Pied. Lilac tri. Chocolate.
Those colors can all be beautiful.
But color doesn't repair poor structure.
For a serious prospect, evaluate:
- structure and overall balance;
- movement and functional soundness;
- temperament;
- pedigree;
- production behind the pedigree;
- compatibility with your goals;
- then personal color and marking preferences.

What Size Is an ABKC Pocket Bully?
The American Bully Kennel Club defines the Pocket variety by mature height at the withers rather than a required weight.
Adult Pocket males are 14 inches to under 17 inches. Adult Pocket females are 13 inches to under 16 inches.
Puppy height cannot guarantee final adult class.
Parents, pedigree, related productions and development provide context, but mature height ultimately determines the dog's variety.

There are dogs in this available group that I believe I'm probably going to look back at a year from now and say:
“I should have kept that one.”
That happens.
It's part of breeding.
You make the best decision you can with the information, space and plans you have at the time.
But when the overall quality is this strong, there isn't always one obvious keeper and a bunch of dogs you don't care about.
Sometimes the hard part is that several of them are good enough to stay.
That's where we are with this group.
