What Is Breed Type in the American Bully Breed? Key Traits, Standards and Characteristics
Learn Everything About American Bully Breed Type: Defining Features, Official Standards, and How to Identify Them

Breed type contains all of the characteristics that are ideal for any particular breed of dog. This can include appearance, structure, character, condition, temperament and movement among others.
In the Bully Community “breed type” is constantly misused, likely due to a lack of understanding. When we say that a dog has more “type” when referring to heavier bone, mass, or substance, we should simply be calling it what it is. If we are only referring to a bulkier build and mass, then we should be specific and not refer to those features as “breed type” as a whole.
The 5 KEY elements pertaining to the American Bully breed are:
Breed Character, Silhouette, Head/Expression, Movement, and Coat
-
Character
-
Silhouette
-
Head/Expression
-
Movement
-
Coat
General Impression:
The American Bully should give the impression of great strength for its size. It is a compact and med/large size dog with a muscular body and blocky head. The American Bully should have the appearance of heavy bone structure with a bulky build and look.
The general Impression is a MUST and part of the breed character, but we must also understand that movement is as much part of breed type than the general Impression since it is a testament to the build (structure) and proportions (as seen in the silhouette). All key elements of breed type.
Silhouette:
Does the dog look like an American Bully?
Head/Expression:
The American should have pronounced cheeks with a distinct stop with a shorter blockier muzzle. Expression is when a judge whistles to your dog and want to check hearing and/or his expression.
Movement:
movement is breed specific and the American Bully should not be expected to as many have said “float” since it’s a breed of heavy mass and extreme features. Movement should be effortless and powerful with moderate reach and powerful drive from the rear, and minimal convergence (seen from down and back — legs coming to the centerline)
Coat:
The coat should be short haired and smooth with tight skin.
Breed type is important for distinguishing one breed from other similar breeds and is essential for evaluating a dog against its own breed standard. Without type, a breed’s characteristics are lost.
Dogs lacking type do not possess the key characteristics of a breed and, therefore, are not likely to produce puppies that carry type (think breeders using a neighbor’s dog)
The ability to consistently pass on breed qualities to the next generation is referred to as “breeding true.”
